Our Mission
We strive to reimagine artificial intelligence through ‘Ōiwi knowledge systems, grounded in aloha ‘āina and ‘āina momona, to challenge colonial frameworks and further the ethical integration of community-driven technologies that center ‘Ōiwi and promote equity.
Our goal is to cultivate factual AI systems rooted in care, abundance, and cultural relevance, honoring all within our spiritual universe.
ʻAʻohe o kahi nānā o luna o ka pali; iho mai a lalo nei; ʻike i ke au nui ke au iki, he alo a he alo.
The top of the cliff isn’t the place to look at us; come down here and learn of the big and little current, face to face.
This project explores the intersection between Kānaka ‘Ōiwi knowledge systems, western soil science, and artificial intelligence to advance environmental justice in Hawai‘i.
Abundant Soils contains seven components:
1) actively developing an ‘Ōiwi cultural foundation in community with ‘Ōiwi knowledge holders;
2) actively developing an understanding of oppression of racialized peoples, centering ‘Ōiwi on Hawaiian land;
3) advancing digital sovereignty;
4) western soil science;
5) intersection between ‘Ōiwi & western soil science;
6) intersection between ‘Ōiwi, western soil science, & AI, and;
7) consistent community engagement.
